Test Content

The BMCT consists of 68 multiple-choice questions with a 30-minute time allotment. Illustrations and diagrams of encountered mechanisms used in different mechanisms are provided and then followed by questions related to each illustration (separately). The BMCT measures a person's ability to understand and implement their knowledge of physical and mechanical elements in practical situations or in their applied job. For those who plan to take the BMCT, it is important to be familiar with basic concepts in physics and physics terminology when interpreting day-to-day experiences.

These are a few broad topics covered in the BMCT:
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Spatial visualization
  • Application of physics
  • Deduction of "how things work"

The BMCT is a popular assessment tool for many industries including technical and industrial occupations. Often, a combined test that includes the BMCT and the Bennett Hand-Tool Dexterity Test are taken together in order to assess motor skills and mechanical knowledge of the applicant. The test can be administered on paper or taken online, individually or in a group setting. The test is currently available in two forms, Form S and Form T and is available in English and Spanish. There are 136 items that are split into 18 categories of mechanical principles that are implemented into the two forms:

Number of Items

 Belt Drive

 Center of Gravity

 Centrifugal Force

 Gravity and Velocity

 Planes and Slopes

 Pulley Systems

 Resolution and Forces

 Shape and Volume

The BMCT is validated for a number of occupations that use the BMCT for personnel selection. Industries and occupations that are relevant to this test are as follows:
  • Engineer
  • Automotive Mechanic
  • Equipment Operators/Transportation Trades (Truck Driver)
