About the STAAR Science TestStudents in grades 3–8 take the STAAR Science Assessment twice—in 5th and 8th grade. The STAAR Science test contains Readiness Standards and Supporting Standards unique to each grade level. These standards ensure that students are assessed only on material that serves an important role in preparing them for the next grade's material, college, and their future careers.
The STAAR Science test expects students to demonstrate knowledge of safe practices and safety equipment as well as ecological conservation of resources and materials. Students are also expected to plan and implement comparative and descriptive investigations by making observations, asking well-defined questions, formulating hypotheses, and using appropriate equipment and technology. The test also assesses their ability to collect and record data using various qualitative means, to analyze patterns, and to interpret the given information. Based on the data, they should formulate reasonable explanations, communicate valid conclusions, and predict trends.
STAAR Science TopicsWhile the science concepts and skills taught in fifth grade differ from those taught in eighth grade, and while they require different levels of understanding, some topics are taught, in one form or another, in all or almost all grades:
- Matter and Energy
- Force, Motion & Energy
- Earth and Space
- Organisms and Environments
