About Assessment Tests

An Assessment Test measures students' academic progress by testing the skills that they learn in the classroom. Some of the most widely known assessment tests are the "high-stakes tests" commonly administered by states in order to evaluate the performance of students, teachers, schools, and school districts. In most states, state-administered assessment tests are based on the Common Core curriculum standards. Assessment tests can also be administered as part of qualification testing for gifted and talented programs in order to test students' ability to perform above grade level. Unlike the abstract reasoning tests that are also commonly used in gifted testing, assessment tests are relatively similar to the tests that your student is used to taking in school.

What Is the MAP?

The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is an assessment test developed and administered by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). The test is designed for kindergarten through 12th grade students, and it assesses reading, language usage, math, and, for some grades, general sciences. The MAP is a computer adaptive test multiple choice test, which means that the test is taken on a computer and adjusts to the test-taker's ability level. After question is answered correctly, the next question is more difficult. After a question is answered incorrectly, the next question is easier. The MAP's computer adaptive testing system allows it to adjust to each student's level, tracking progress at, below, and and above grade level. Though the MAP is an untimed test, it typically takes less than an hour to complete. The MAP test is a useful tool for both teachers and students, measuring student progress so that teachers can pinpoint weaker areas to work on and stronger areas where students need to be challenged. 

What Is the STAAR?

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) is a series of standardized tests that all Texas public school students are required to take. It assesses the knowledge students have gained in their respective grade levels. The material on the STAAR test is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum, which is taught in all Texas public schools. The STAAR primarily consists of multiple choice questions, and also essays in grade 4, grade 7, and high school. Here are the STAAR tests given at different grade levels:

• Reading and Mathematics: Grades 3-8
• Writing: Grades 4 and 7
• Science: Grades 5 and 8
• Social Studies: Grade 8
• High School End of Course (EOC) exams in English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History 

STAAR scores classify student performance at three levels: Did Not Meet Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level. Students in grade 5 and grade 8 must perform at least to the Approaches Grade Level standard in order to be promoted to the next grade. Students in high school must perform to at least at the Approaches Grade Level standard in order to graduate. Re-tests and alternative testing arrangements are available to students with special needs and in special circumstances.

What Is the ITBS/Iowa Assesments?

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a series of standardized tests distributed by the College of Education of the University of Iowa. The ITBS is one of the oldest academic assessment tests, and is used throughout the United States. These tests are designed to assess student achievement and progress from kindergarten through grade 8. When used in gifted and talented testing, the ITBS helps to determine whether a student is performing above grade level, and if so, how far above grade level. The ITBS tests five subjects using a multiple choice format: Language Arts, Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies.
