CogAT, ITBS and Star Testing at Clyde Hill Elementary School

Schools in Bellevue School District typically use the CogAT, the ITBS, and Star Assessments to screen students for gifted programs. The CogAT and ITBS are administered at designated times to applicants to gifted programs, while the Star Assesments are administered to all students to track performance. Preparation with TestPrep-Online can significantly reduce testing anxiety on these designated gifted testing days by giving your child a sense of familiarity with the tests.

The CogAT measures students’ problem-solving skills and level of cognitive development. Questions are designed to assess students’ core ability to learn and reason and are not based on a given curriculum or material. The CogAT is comprised of three subtests in different areas of reasoning: a verbal battery, involving reasoning with words and sentences; a nonverbal battery, focused on figural reasoning; and a quantitative battery, measuring students' understanding of quantitative relationships and concepts. To learn more about the test, head over to our CogAT page.

The Star Assessments and ITBS, on the other hand, are geared to measure skills that are learned in school. At the elementary school level, the Star Assessments are used to measure reading and math achievement. The test is adaptive and computer based, meaning the level of difficulty is continuously adjusted in accordance with students’ response. The Star Assessments are taken by all students as part of the educational program in Bellevue School District. The computerized assessment adjusts itself to each student's level, so gifted students can demonstrate above-grade-level performance. The ITBS is administered as part of gifted testing at one level above a student's grade level.
