My son was preparing for CogAT Level 9. With practice, my son got used to the question styles and the practice built his confidence with the exam. Once kids know they can do well, there is no limit – they will always do their best. I have recommended TestPrep-Online to all my friends.

Worth it. My son was taking the CogAT Level 5/6 for school and with help from the practice tests, he scored well and was able to get into the county's gifted program. Thank you so much.

What is the CogAT Test 2nd Grade?

The CogAT is a cognitive abilities test used mostly as an admission exam into gifted schools and programs. The test is divided into three different sections known as batteries: Verbal battery, Nonverbal battery, and Quantitative battery. These batteries feature the following subtopics: Picture/Verbal analogies, Sentence Completion, Picture/Verbal Classification, Number Analogies, Number Series, Number Puzzles, Figure Matrices, Figure Classification, and Paper Folding. Each of these subtopics help develop a different skill and it is important to see all the different types of questions, their solutions, and the explanations to avoid having any surprises the day of the test.

The primary levels of the CogAT test focus more on picture analogies and picture classification instead of their verbal equivalents. This is to make the questions more intuitive and easier to solve for children that are still learning to read.

In addition to the CogAT, a new test has been released known as the CogAT Screening Form. The CogAT Screening Form consists of the first section in each of the batteries of the original CogAT test. That is to say, Picture/Verbal Analogies (depending on the grade), Number Analogies, and Figure Matrices. Make sure to check whether your child will be taking the CogAT or the CogAT Screening Form and the appropriate level of the test.

This includes the structure of the test, the conditions (time constraint, difficulty, format), and more.

CogAT Scores

There are two norms used by the CogAT when scoring results. One of the norms, the age norm, is used to compare the performance in relation to other children of the same age. The CogAT also returns a raw score, which is later transformed into a Standard Age Score (also known as SAS).

You can also check our website for more explanations about the norms, scoring method, contents, and answer any question you may have about the CogAT, or the CogAT Screening Form. If something is unclear, you can always contact us with questions about the test, our platform, or anything you need help understanding.

Take a look at the sample question below to understand the format of the CogAT, its questions, the difficulty, and the level of the explanations we provide. This sample question belongs to the subtopic "picture analogies" and for this sort of questions, you are requested to understand the relationship between to images and find which one of the answer choices has the same relationship with a given image.

CogAT 2nd Grade Sample Question

The pictures in the boxes on the top belong together in a certain way. What picture belongs with the bottom picture in the same way that the pictures on top belong together?

The correct answer is (A), the candle.

The images on the top row, that is the lightbulb and the lamp, are an example of how two things go together in a certain way. An explanation for this could be that in order to illuminate a room, a lamp uses a lightbulb.

Similarly, in order for a candle to illuminate a room, you need fire, or more specifically, a flame. Notice that the order of the images is important. In every row, the image to the right needs the image to the left. The lamp needs the lightbulb, much like the candle needs the flame.

Even though the kettle needs a flame to function, the function it serves is not the same. The lamp is used to illuminate while the kettle is used to boil water. Finally, the light switch and the flashlight both help illuminate a room, but none of them needs fire to function (the flashlight, for example, needs batteries to function). Therefore, these answers cannot be correct.
