About the Pleasanton Unified School District

Fairlands Elementary School is one of nine elementary schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District. The district offers an additional nine schools, ranging from pre–K to middle and high school institutions.

The Pleasanton Unified School District has adopted the Cognitive Abilities Test Screener (the CogAT) as a means to identify students for GATE programs. All students from 3rd to 7th grade within the Pleasanton Unified School District receive the opportunity to undergo GATE identification testing at least once. All third grade students are automatically tested for the GATE program with the CogAT test.

Students beyond 3rd grade can undergo GATE testing if they are nominated by school staff, including teachers, or parents. Students may be tested every other year to see if they are eligible for the GATE program.

You can increase the likelihood that your child will be selected to participate in the GATE program by helping your child prepare. CogAT practice tests, with CogAT questions and answers offer your child the opportunity to familiarize him or herself with the test material.

About CogAT GATE Testing at Fairlands Elementary School

Although testing doesn't begin until 3rd grade, you can help your child prepare early with test preparation material for the earlier CogAT Levels.

Our comprehensive CogAT resources offer hundreds of practice questions for the three subtests in the CogAT test. Choose the correct level for your child from the list below:

The Cognitive Abilities Test is a test frequently used across America to identify children suitable for GATE, or gifted and talented, programs. The CogAT consists of three batteries: the Verbal Battery, the Quantitative Battery, and the Nonverbal Battery. Students take 154 questions in grade 2, 170 questions in grade 3, and 176 questions in grades 4, 5, and 6.

If your child is taking a lower level of the CogAT, he or she can expect questions to consist of images and figures. Your child will be given assistance in the form of an instructor who reads aloud instructions for all the batteries. Your child must then choose the correct image or figure to solve the question.

If your child is taking a higher level of the CogAT, he or she will encounter few as older students are expected to be better equipped to manage more complex verbal questions. Learn more about the CogAT test, and the different levels, here.
