What is the OLSAT Level C?

The OLSAT Level C is the third OLSAT level and is targeted towards students in the 2nd grade. The OLSAT 2nd grade assesses verbal and nonverbal skills and is often used as an important admissions criterion when applying for private schools and for entry into advanced courses. Additionally, the OLSAT Level C is commonly used by schools to measure academic progress and assess students’ strengths and weaknesses.

The questions found on the OLSAT Level C reflect the skill sets typically found in children in the 2nd grade.

The OLSAT Test is often used in districtwide testing throughout a school district. For example, the OLSAT Level C is administered to all 2nd grade students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Learn more about the OLSAT in the LAUSD. Additionally, you can search for gifted testing in your own school district.

OLSAT Test Format

Your 2nd grader will face 60 questions (30 verbal and 30 nonverbal) on the OLSAT Level C, with 72 minutes to complete the test. Since many children in the 2nd grade are able to read, only half of the OLSAT Level C questions are read aloud by a test administrator, while the other half of the OLSAT Level C is completed independently.

The instructions of each question should be read aloud (once) to the child when practicing for the test, as is done on the actual OLSAT Test. For your convenience, TestPrep-Online currently provides audio instructions for the following question types: Following Directions, Aural Reasoning, Arithmetic Reasoning.

Tips for Strengthening OLSAT Scores

  • Give your child some assistance. Second-graders are still very young and will require your help. However, since you will not be there during the real test, help your child become confident by helping him or her with the first questions, making sure he or she understands them completely, and then letting him or her practice alone.
  • Make sure to go over all types of questions. Sometimes a child may find certain types of questions easier than others. This does not mean he or she will not benefit from practicing that type. Remember the real test consists of questions of varying difficulty, and it is necessary to obtain tools for solving all types of questions. Time is also an issue; the more your child practices certain types, even if they are relatively easy, the faster he or she will be able to solve them on the real test.
  • Find your child's strengths and weaknesses. Although it is important to go over all types of questions, it is also important to put a bigger focus on the types of questions your child is having difficulties with.
  • Help your child plan his or her time. Make sure your child follows a study routine that will help him or her succeed and consist of time to solve questions, time to go over the explanations, and time to practice those types of questions he or she finds more difficult.
  • Make sure your child eats nutritious food before studying. According to studies, children achieve better results after a good meal that does not contain sweets, but consists of complex carbohydrates, vegetables, and legumes.
  • Do not forget the explanations. Our prep packs offer a detailed explanation to each and every question. Getting a question right does not mean it is unnecessary to read the explanation, because sometimes children answer correctly but do not fully understand the material covered by the explanation.
