About the OLSAT Level D

Students in the 3rd grade typically take the OLSAT Level D, which reflects the rich verbal and nonverbal cognitive development of students in the 3rd grade.

By the time students reach the 3rd grade, they have usually mastered and learned how to implement skills they have learned in previous grades. For example, students shift from learning to read to reading in order to learn. Thus, the OLSAT Level D focuses less on following directions and aural skills (both of which are already trivial for many 3rd graders) and focuses more on questions relating to verbal skills 3rd graders taking the OLSAT Level D are tested in both comprehension and vocabulary through finding antonyms and synonyms.

Pictorial reasoning questions are not used on the OLSAT Level D. Instead, quantitative reasoning skills are measured significantly more than in previous OLSAT-8 levels, suiting the present third grade math curriculum. Read more about all of the different question types on the OLSAT.

OLSAT Test Format

The OLSAT Level D is quite different from OLSAT Levels A-C with regard to test content. The OLSAT Level D contains 64 questions (32 verbal, 32 nonverbal) and has two sections, and students have 50 minutes to complete the test. 3rd grade students are expected to be able to read and therefore questions are not read aloud.

Tips for Strengthening OLSAT Scores

• Make sure your and your child know everything there is to know about the test. Knowledge is power. Check our FAQ page for more information about the test. Read through the information on this website and have a chat with your child's teachers. If your child knows what is coming, he or she will be much more confident and more likely to achieve a high score.
• Build a study routine. If your child has a routine to stick to, he or she will be more focused and independent. Involve your child in the process of building the routine - this will make it easier to stick to it.
• Do not skip the explanations. Our website provides full explanations for each question. Even if your child answers a question correctly, it is still important to read the explanations. Sometimes a child knows the correct answer but does not know why. Knowing the theory provides the child with tools for the next question, which might be more difficult.
• Find out your child's strength and weaknesses. While working with your child, try to notice what types of questions he or she finds easier or more difficult. This will help you decide what topics to focus on while studying.
• Remember to cover all question types. Even if your child finds certain types of questions easy, it is still important to practice them and obtain tools for the more difficult ones, even as you might want to focus on other topics.
• Encourage your child to eat and sleep well. Nutritious food and a good night's sleep are a must for academic success. Studies have shown that students who sleep well and have a good meal before school achieve better academic results. Provide your child with some healthy food and avoid sweets, which make the sugar levels, along with your child's concentration, drop after a short while.
• Help your child learn independently. While your involvement in your child's learning process is important, remember you will not be there during the real test. Therefore, your child needs to learn how to work alone. The best way is to go through the first few questions together, make sure your child understands what to do, then let him or her practice alone and call you only if a problem occurs.
