Overview of CUNY Assessment Tests

CUNY placement exams are critical for your admission to CUNY undergraduate programs as well as for 1st semester course placement. CUNY strongly recommends that you prepare for your aptitude tests. Keeping step with College Placement tests throughout the U.S., CUNY Assessment Tests (CATs) cover three main topics:

The aim of the CUNY placement test is to ensure that students begin their college education in the appropriate class, depending on their knowledge of the fields appertaining to reading, writing and math. Students are not officially accepted a CUNY university program until they pass the three basic college readiness tests. Once admitted, class placement is determined by aptitude test scores. As to the Community College (CCNY), students must pass the Assessment Test prior to registering for college-level courses.

Your CUNY test results will have a long-term effect on cost and overall college education. Score below the minimum proficiency threshold and you will find yourself in a remedial class concerning your weak subjects, adding a semester or a year to your educational plans. CUNY Math Assessment Test

The CUNY math test is computer-based, untimed and multiple-choice. You can expect to encounter four separate sections:
  • Numerical Skills/Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra
  • College Algebra
  • Trigonometry

The CUNY assessment test math relates to your placement during the 1st semester college algebra. the test begins with the Algebra section. If you do well on that portion, you will m ove on to the College Algebra part of the CATM. Otherwise, you will find yourself taking the Numerical Skills/Pre-Algebra section, where you need to receive at least a score of 45.

CUNY Reading Assessment Test

The goal of CATR is to assess your reading comprehension ability, similarly to other college English placement tests. The CUNY reading test is a computer-based exam with an untimed, multiple-choice format. In order to register for a college-level English course, a reading assessment score of at least 70 is necessary.

The test itself consists of several passages, each followed by a short series of questions. The answers can be found within the text of the passage.

CUNY Writing Assessment Test

The CUNY writing test assesses your readiness to begin a college-level English writing course, the CATW is a standardized test designed to measure your reading, thinking and writing skills. When participating in the CATW, you will find a 90-minute timed test containing two essays. After reading the presented essay, you are required to write a Response Essay.

The scoring concerns the structure of your Response and the written connection between each sentence and between each paragraph. The minimum proficiency total score is 56. Connecting your ideas and clearly communicating your thoughts in a well-organized Response Essay will place you on the road to registering for a 1st semester CUNY College Composition I course.
