What Is the OLSAT Level E?

The OLSAT Level E is administered to students in 4th and 5th grades. Many schools require children to take the OLSAT Level E in order to apply for specialized middle schools or gifted and talented programs.

The OLSAT Level E measures these skills that 4th and 5th graders are expected to acquire. There are questions on the OLSAT Level E which ask students to find the logical relationship among words in a sentence or to find the missing word necessary to complete a sentence. Quantitative reasoning questions assess the ability to use numbers in order to infer relationships, deduce computational rules, and predict outcomes according to computational rules. For more about what appears on the OLSAT, read about all of the OLSAT question types.

Tips for Strengthening OLSAT Scores

  • Find out as much as you can about the test. If you and your child know everything there is to know about the test, you will know how to prepare for it and your child will feel more confident. Read through the information on our website, especially our FAQ page, and do not hesitate to have a chat with your child's teachers as well.
  • Keep a positive attitude. If you are optimistic, your child will be optimistic, too. A student with a positive attitude is more likely to succeed!
  • Studying should be done in sessions and each session should not last too long. Do not let your child study for hours and hours with no breaks - it might be ineffective. Taking short breaks from time to time is important. Encourage your child to "re-energize" by doing something he or she likes during break time: it will help him/her to feel motivated.
  • Encourage good eating and sleeping habits. Studying for the test should not stop your child from eating nutritious meals or getting enough sleep. Studying will be less effective without either of these. Provide plenty of vegetables, fruit, proteins, and complex carbohydrates to make sure your child keeps his or her energy levels. Getting enough sleep is also important, and keep in mind that children need more sleep than adults.
  • Praise good study habits. Remember, praising is always more effective than reprimanding. Praise your child whenever he or she shows good study habits, such as studying at reasonable hours, taking short breaks, not putting off studying in favor of a more enjoyable activity, keeping a good pace, etc.
  • Let your child study alone. While it is important that you be available should your child require your help, remember that you will not be around during the actual test and your child must learn to cope. Therefore, the best method is to go over the first few questions with your child, make sure he or she understands what to do, then leave the room and let him or her work alone with you only being available for questions. Encourage your child to think thoroughly and try several times before calling you. It is also a good idea to read the explanation first before calling you.
