About the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test

The Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) is a short-form assessment used to evaluate basic quantitative and verbal skills in order to evaluate job candidates for entry-level position. The WBST is also often used for admissions and placement purposes in academic programs (such as several nursing programs). As the test's name suggests, the WBST tests basic skills that are essential to almost any educational program or career. The skills tested on the WBST are also helpful in everyday activities like keeping a budget and reading a newspaper.

Who Takes the WBST?

Entry-level job candidates are often required to take the WBST. However, the WBST is also used for other purposes. Subway™, for example, uses it to assess individuals who would like to own a Subway franchise. Some nursing programs use the WBST as an admissions exam. A version of the WBST is used as a qualification exam for Ability-to-Benefit (ATB) status, which allows students without a high school diploma or high school equivalency to receive federal financial aid for college. A Spanish-language version of the WBST may be taken for ABT qualification.

Success on the WBST can open doors of opportunity for people from all walks of life. Scoring strongly on the WBST empowers people to take a big step in their education or career. Mastering the skills tested on the WBST is the first step to studying or working in fields that require more advanced reasoning skills.

WBST Format and Question Types

There are two sections on the WBST: verbal (50 questions) and quantitative (45 questions). You will have 20 minutes to complete each section (a total of 40 minutes). All questions are multiple choice with four options (A, B, C, or D). Depending on the job or program to which you are applying, you may only be required to take one of the sections of the WBST. The score on each section is determined simply by the number of questions answered correctly. There is no single definition of a good score, since each employer or college has its own criteria. There is no penalty for guessing. You are allowed to skip questions and return to them. The questions on the WBST focus on fundamental math and reading skills that are necessary for daily tasks. Here are the skills tested on the test:

The WBST may be taken either on paper or online. If you take the test at home online, make sure you have quiet working conditions and a reliable computer with a strong internet connection. If this is difficult or impossible for you at home, you can take the online test at a public library. If you take the online version of the test, your results will be available immediately.

WBST Test-Taking Strategy

Most people who take the test are unable to give full consideration to each question due to time pressure. On the verbal section, you have an average of 24 seconds for each question. On the quantitative section, you have an average of 27 seconds for each question.

Most people who take the test are unable to give full consideration to each question due to time pressure. On the verbal section, you have an average of 24 seconds for each question. On the quantitative section, you have an average of 27 seconds for each question.

Some questions will probably take you less than these average times to solve, while others will take you more. An effective strategy for the WBST is to answer all of the questions you can answer quickly first, then go back to the questions you know how to solve but which will probably take you longer, and then finally work on the most challenging and time-demanding questions. You can maximize your score by starting with the "low-hanging fruit" and working your way up the tree.
