What are figure matrices?

A figure matrix is a grid of figures with one cell left empty. The figures follow a rule that runs across the rows, down the columns, or both. Your child studies the pattern, works out the rule and chooses, from the answer options, the figure that completes the grid.

Figure matrices use shapes, patterns and symbols rather than words or numbers, so they measure how well a child reasons with visual information. The question type forms part of the Non-Verbal Reasoning Battery in the CAT4 and the Nonverbal Battery in the CogAT.

The rule in a figure matrix usually comes down to a small number of changes. The patterns your child will meet most often involve:

  • the size, shape or shading of a figure changing from one cell to the next
  • a figure turning, flipping or moving to a new position
  • figures being added, removed or combined

Repeated practice with questions of this kind gives your child the chance to recognize these changes and to put the rule into words.

The answer is E.

Look at the top row first. Three things change from the first picture to the second:

  1. The picture is flipped from left to right. The white square moves from the right side to the left, and the circle moves from the left side to the right.
  2. The colors change. The gray background becomes black, the black triangle becomes gray, and the circle becomes white. The square stays white.
  3. The circle moves in front of the triangle, so it is no longer partly hidden.

Now make the same three changes to the bottom picture. Flip it, so the square is at the bottom left and the circle is at the bottom right. Make the background black and the triangle gray. Put the white circle in front of the triangle. The triangle still sits on the bottom edge, and the circle is still low down.

The other options do not follow these changes:

  • A has the triangle in front of the square.
  • B has a gray background instead of black.
  • C has the circle behind the triangle.
  • D has the circle too high, and the triangle does not reach the bottom edge.

What is included in the Figure Matrices Enrichment Pack

The pack is built for focused repetition on a single question type. It contains nine targeted drills with detailed answer explanations and over 200 questions in total, grouped as follows:

  • Elementary to intermediate level: 43 questions
  • Intermediate to advanced level: 45 questions
  • Extended practice: 115 questions
  • detailed answer explanations

Because the pack concentrates on one question type, it complements broader preparation rather than replacing it.

The detailed explanations let you and your child see how each pattern works and why the correct figure completes the grid. Because the questions cover elementary to advanced levels, the pack gives your child room to start with simpler patterns and move on to harder ones.

Who the pack is for

The Figure Matrices Enrichment Pack is designed for children who are preparing for a test that includes figure matrices, and for those who need extra practice on this question type. Two tests include the section:

  • CAT4: Figure Matrices is part of the Non-Verbal Reasoning Battery, together with Figure Classification

  • CogAT: Figure Matrices is part of the Nonverbal Battery

FAQs

Figure matrices appear in the CAT4, where they form part of the Non-Verbal Reasoning Battery alongside Figure Classification, and in the CogAT, where they form part of the Nonverbal Battery. The Figure Matrices Enrichment Pack focuses on this one question type, so it can be used for either test, or simply as extra practice on figure matrices alongside any other preparation.

The pack contains nine targeted drills with a combined total of over 200 questions. The questions span elementary to advanced levels, so your child can begin with simpler patterns and move on to harder ones. The pack also includes detailed answer explanations that show how each pattern works and why the correct figure completes the grid, so you can review each question together with your child.

No. The Figure Matrices Enrichment Pack is available on its own, and no other PrepPack is required. It contains drills on figure matrices only, so it adds focused repetition on one question type rather than preparation for the whole test. A full PrepPack, such as the CAT4 Levels A and B PrepPack, includes quizzes, full-length tests, a study guide, a score guide and instructional videos.

Yes. When you buy a PrepPack, the Figure Matrices Enrichment Pack appears under Related Products on the PrepPack page, where it can be ticked and added to your order for $19. If you would like to buy it without a PrepPack, the standalone price is $29. The pack is the same in both cases, with nine targeted drills, over 200 questions and detailed answer explanations.
